Gustav Krupp mounted a modified 1-pounder gun, the "Ballonabwehrkanone" (i.e. balloon defence cannon), on top of a horse-drawn carriage for the purpose of shooting down communication balloons in the Franco-Prussian War (1870).
"Stahlhelm" translates to "steel helmet", however the distinctive German helmet design is commonly referred to as a Stahlhelm.
