| The last in the No 4 family of bayonets made up of several sheet metal stampings welded together. 196,200 were produced, all by Joseph Lucas Ltd., Chester Street, Birmingham. The No. 4 Mk. III was declared obsolete in 1946. |

| The term bayonette itself dates back to the second half of the 16th century. Pierre Borel wrote in 1655 that a kind of long-knife called a bayonette was made in Bayonne but does not give any further description so it is not known if it was meant to be attached to a firearm. |
