| Bauer Ordinance Corporation was the initial contractor. Made in 1967-1969. Scabbard is the M8A1 used with all post war bayonets until replaced by the M10 scabbard. |

| The term bayonette itself dates back to the second half of the 16th century. Pierre Borel wrote in 1655 that a kind of long-knife called a bayonette was made in Bayonne but does not give any further description so it is not known if it was meant to be attached to a firearm. |
