Bauer Ordinance Corporation was the initial contractor. Made in 1967-1969. Scabbard is the M8A1 used with all post war bayonets until replaced by the M10 scabbard.

The term bayonette itself dates back to the second half of the 16th century. Pierre Borel wrote in 1655 that a kind of long-knife called a bayonette was made in Bayonne but does not give any further description so it is not known if it was meant to be attached to a firearm.
