The US Army adopted the successful French Modele 1897 field gun during World War 1. During the 1930s, the 'US 75mm M1897' guns were upgraded with the split trail M2A3 chassis. 900 '75 mm Gun 1897' were provided to the UK after they lost most of their heavy weapons on the continent at the beginning of World War II. By the time the US entered the war the guns were obsolete but some were mounted on M3 Half-Track which were designated the M3 Gun Motor Carriage.
